At their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday (Sept. 24), the Lubbock Independent School District (Lubbock ISD) Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of District 5 Trustee John Weddige and will begin the process of identifying the person who will serve the rest of the District 5 term on the board.

Weddige announced his resignation from the Board of Trustees, effective as of Sept. 30. He said when he first began his service on the board in 2024, he and his wife, Katy, had two children and two full-time careers. Last August, their family grew with the addition of an 8-day-old baby girl.

“While I knew that adding a third child would significantly change the demands on our family, I also knew how much I loved this district and the opportunity to serve our community. For the past year, I have worked hard to balance the additional responsibilities of my family, my career, and my service on the Board,” Weddige said. “After much thought, I have come to the difficult decision that I can no longer give each of those responsibilities the time and attention they deserve. While I will genuinely miss the work of being a trustee and the opportunity to serve the students, families, teachers, and staff of Lubbock ISD, I know that dedicating the necessary time to my family and my career is the right decision for myself and my family at this point in our lives.”

Weddige said he was deeply grateful for the privilege of serving on the Board, for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated trustees and educators who share a commitment to developing and educating the children of the Lubbock community, and for the opportunity to serve the people in Lubbock ISD’s District 5. He said it was an honor and a privilege to serve as a trustee.

“My time on the Board has been incredibly meaningful, and I will always value the experiences, relationships, and perspective I gained through this service,” Weddige said. “I remain committed to supporting Lubbock ISD and will do everything I can to assist with the transition of my responsibilities and ensure continuity during this period of transition.”

The board will now accept letters of interest and resumes from individuals who would like to be considered for the District 5 seat. Materials can be emailed to Board President Nancy Sharp at [email protected] and will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Oct. 13. The board will then consider the applicants, conduct interviews and decide on the individual who will serve out the remainder of the District 5 term (set to conclude in May 2028).

The appointment should be made by the end of the fall semester.
